During the latest SPIE Photonics West conference (San Francisco, USA) project partner Lionix International presented their results of the first stress-optic modulator in a silicon nitride-based waveguide platform in the telecommunication C-band. In these low-power phase modulators the refractive index of the waveguiding materials is controlled by the stress-optic effect induced by actuating a 2 μm thick PZT layer on top of the TriPleX waveguide. The technology of Solmates allowed for the integration of PLD-deposited PZT materials in silicon photonics platforms.
